Welcome to “A Crazy Man Teaches You about America’s Problems, Part 1: The Soup Sandwich That is Immigration.
Step one in fixing a problem is stopping the cause of the problem.
Wanna know what’s going on at the border? Lots of stuff.
But heres the biggest issue:
Parents bringing their children to cross the border illegally.
When they are caught, they claim asylum and have to be seen by a judge to determine if they have a valid claim.
The wait to see a judge is years.
Even if you agree that parents from another country entering illegally is something that should result in MORE taxpayer money being spent on them, you still have to confine the parents until they can see a judge.
The alternative is to deport them until they can see a judge, or release them inside the country until they can see a judge.
Neither of those is a viable option for obvious reasons.
So confinement is the obvious best choice of all the bad options.
But confinement where?
We have facilities on the border but guess what- that’s right, overwhelmed.
So we create tent cities or house them in nearby confinement areas.
So why are parents being separated from kids?
Two reasons: a deterrent to discourage parents from crossing illegally, and to free up more confinement space.
If you house families together, you have to have space for families. Those facilities are hella overpacked.
That’s right- HELLA.
Or you can separate them and double your confinement space.
Is it ok to do this? I wouldn’t. I’m not sure how any parent could.
But I get it.
And I was ok with it.
Until this abuse stuff came out.
Guys. We gave to fix the issue.
Confining a lot of people together is the only thing to do when they’re waiting to see an asylum judge.
And guess what happens when a lot of people are held in a confined area with literally NOTHING TO DO BUT WAIT. That’s right. A lot of bad stuff will happen. Ask literally ANYONE who has worked in a prison.
What we are seeing is the EFFECTS of a problem.
And we have to stop the CAUSE, before you can begin to fix it.
Because if you dont, it will just happen again.
So you know what we should do? We should fix our SOUP SANDWICH of an immigration system.
Maybe with some kind of legislative overhaul, like the one our Federal Government has been unable to pass since 1996 (which- by the way, combined with another Campbell’s Chicken Soup Sandwich in 1986 is what CAUSED this problem)?
And IS THIS AN EMERGENCY???
I dont know if theres an emergency on the border, but I can buy it.
I DO think it’s the wrong thing to do when you got elected promising a wall, then tried to fun the wall by shutting down the government, then tried to fund the wall through a budget deal, then decided to declare an emergency (which included the words, “I didn’t have to do this”) to get it done.
Because even if it IS an emergency, that just looks bad.
So what comes next, how do we fix it.
Well, I’ll tell ya, scooter- we won’t.
It won’t get fixed. Ever.
It will get worse and worse and worse and every year the decisions on how to treat the symptoms will get harder and harder and harder.

Because I read history. I LOVE history.

Because historically, our leaders kept treating the SYMPTOMS of a problem. By a COMPROMISE here and there and everywhere.
And eventually there were no more compromises.
Eventually the divisions became so pronounced that we just couldn’t stand it anymore.
And then…
