It’s time to have a talk.

Let’s talk about racism.
Aight, so every time I seem to have a conversation about a black person being prejudicial or somehow biased against a white person in a way that is now culturally unacceptable to anyone EXCEPT white people, I get someone inevitably bringing up this little nugget:
“Why dont you condemn these right-wing nutjobs for shooting up churches or driving into crowds of people? Why was that ok but this isn’t?”
ORRRR…..
“Why dont we talk about how the historical perspective behind using this racial term versus that racial term? Why was it ok then?”
ORRRRR…..
“You cant talk about affirmative action without talking about the enslavement of a race, and the country that was built upen their backs, against their wills” (a fact I agree with).
The comparison is usually that a certain kind of white bias, prejudice or racism (yes there is a difference) isnt a big deal because of these right-wing nutjobs TODAY, some racist assholes DECADES ago, or pretty much every rich American CENTURIES AGO doing something to someone if color in those respective time frames.
Here’s what most people agree with:
The “actions, language and the reasoning that led to them ” was WRONG when it was used against people that look like you.
We- all people within the “normal” range of people in the United States- agree with that sentiment.
No one believes that people should be shot because of their race today. No one believes that a mixed race marriage should be blocked by law. No one believes that it is ok to enslave anyone, for pretty much any reason (except trivial things like not being able to pay a parking ticket- but that’s a different rant).
Everyone believes this today. There are people that don’t l, but they are so rare that I’m ok with saying “everyone” and simply classifying the remainder in that category of serial killers and people who believe the earth is flat.
I dont count them when I talk about things that make sense.
I know there are people out there who dont make sense in those fundamental ways like a spherical planet and racial bondage.
But they arent relevant to my conversations in any meaningful way because they arent relevant to things like, “fixing what’s broke”.
There are people that believe the Earth is flat and sits on a giant turtles back (no I’m not kidding), but WE- as a society- dont need them to get to Mars.
So as we move forward on this quest to “fix” racism- we need to stop letting the logic of morons nag us on our quest, or even enter into our planning.
If they break a law, deal with it accordingly. If they hurt someone, put them in jail.
Until then, try to medicate the bastards and if they refuse ignore them until (see above).
***here is what SO MANY PEOPLE THAT HAVE CONVERSATIONS ON THIS SUBJECT do not understand***
You using that same kind of racial ignorance in any way, even if it’s a form of racial vengeance or irony or whatever the fuck- IS EQUALLY IGNORANT.
Now you CAN argue that this intentional ignorance is not as WRONG because ultimately this form of “racial vengeance” has no consequences except for some butthurt crybabies like me- and compared to the kind of consequences that were attached to the ignorance when it was directed at your racial brethren yesterday, your grandfather 30+ years ago or your ancestor(s).
But what you CANT do is pretend that its not equally racist, prejudicial and/or ignorant to make remarks like that.
If it is in the service of a greater good in your mind- go with Buddha. Namaste, bitches.
But don’t believe for ONE SECOND that you are any better than the people who used that logic and reasoning today, decades ago or centuries ago.
You’re not.
Although I will grant you that you CAN be more RIGHT.
